Our sixth vendor for our Local Vendor Spotlights isWood Street Bakery out of Whitewater. If you frequent the Whitewater City Market, you've undoubtedly had their delicious baked goods. Thanks for these wonderful answers, Therese McKenzie and @JimMcKenzie!
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself/your mission/family/what you create?
Our family's vision is to be involved in our community through providing baked goods that are nutritious, affordable and appealing. We draw from our backgrounds in engineering to try to make our baking process more efficient, and our years living in Germany inspire us to create quality breads and pastries. Our top selling products are gourmet granola and artisan breads, with our scones also becoming more popular. All of our products are made from scratch and contain whole grains, most have little or no added sugar, and some are made with local or organic ingredients.
2. What’s your favorite thing to do at your business?
Therese's favorite thing to do is experiment with new bakery products, and Jim's favorite activity is designing and improving the baking equipment. Together we enjoy interacting with people in our community, especially at the local market.
3. Do you have a go-to recipe to share? And why is it your #1 go-to?
One of our favorite go-to recipes is our family recipe for oatmeal chocolate chip cookies (recipe attached). We like it because it satisfies our sweet tooth, but is healthier than most cookies since it has less sugar and lots of whole grains. We haven't sold these cookies in our bakery because we're not convinced that other people would actually like them!
4. What’s a little known fact about you or your business?
Our family lived in China for three years.
5. What are you most looking forward to about the Whitewater Grocery Co.?
We're looking forward to having daily access to local, fresh, quality food.
